Today is the last day to view the contents of the Bunny Mellon Interiors Auction at Sotheby’s. Starting Monday, the contents of Mellon’s 5 homes will be sold off to the highest bidder–and if the art and jewelry auctions are any indication, her interior pieces will go for much more than their estimated value. If you are in New York City, and have a chance to stop in, it’s a great opportunity to see a beautiful collection of furniture and collectibles amassed by one of America’s chicest and most iconic women. Mellon didn’t concern herself with what was in fashion or what others were buying at the time; she bought what she loved and created incredibly original and understated homes in the process. Her homes were a true mix of high and low–original Giacometti pieces lived side by side flea market finds. She was 103 years old when she passed away in March this year. Below, the entrance at Oak Spring Farms, her 4,000-acre home in Upperville, Virginia.
The garden house (Mellon was an avid gardener–she replanted the White House Rose Garden for close friend Jackie Kennedy in 1962) painted by French artist Fernand Renard.
We’d love to buy these baskets.
If you can’t make it to NY for the preview, you can view all of the lots online at Sothebys.com. And if you are interested in bidding, you can also do that online and watch all the action live! Below, a Diego Giacometti table basse trapezoidal coffee table estimated at $80,000 to $120,000.
