We love the look of “outdoor furniture” indoors anytime of the year, but now that summer is officially here, it’s on our minds even more. Bringing in a little wicker or rattan to an otherwise dressy living room or family room is always a nice way to add a casual, more relaxed feeling as well as introduce a new material and texture into a room. The carriage home of interior designer Arthur E Smith (below) is an absolutely wonderful example of the seamless integration of some of the best outdoor furniture materials.
More of Smith’s home in Charleston, NC…Notice the wicker chairs and garden stool.
An old wood bench used as a coffee table…
Chicago-based designer Alessandra Branca is a genius at incorporating outdoor furniture into her interiors. She designs many beautiful homes on Harbor Island in the Bahamas–this one below, is her own. It looks wonderfully relaxed and comfortable. In another room of her home, she painted a bamboo Brighton style chair bright red. Designer Celerie Kemble (queen of Palm Beach chic!), loves to incorporate natural materials and outdoor furniture in her interiors. Below, the beach club she recently finished in the Dominican Republic. These rooms below, designed by the architect Madison Spencer, feature a wonderful trellis detail on the ceiling with wicker and bamboo furnishings sprinkled throughout.
It’s a perfect blend of architectural formality and whimsy.
Looking to bring a little bit of this casual elegance to your home? Here are a few of our favorite “outdoor” items, all available online.
