This year’s Kips Bay Decorator Show House–probably the most anticipated Show House of the year–is taking place in Manhattan’s Villard Houses built by McKim, Mead & White in the early 1880’s. You can buy a ticket to tour this incredible house for $35 (proceeds go to the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club). This house is by far one of the best Kips Bay Show Houses in recent memory, with rooms designed by Martin Lawrence Bullard, Alexa Hampton, Markham Roberts, Carrier & Company, Vincente Wolf and Christopher Peackock to name a few. Our favorite room though, and the one we want to share with you today, was hands down Alexa Hampton’s incredibly layered sitting room. We both walked into her room and just melted, taking in every little detail of her beautifully orchestrated room would take hours. (Below two photos by Timothy Bell) The inspiration for Hampton’s room was Mudejar tiles, which she commissioned decorative painter Chuck Fischer to approximate, having Duggal digitally reprint Fischer’s painting into wallpaper to cover the entire room. About her decision to use Mudejar tile-inspired wallpaper, Hampton says “To offset the cool sensibility that the appearance of a geometric tiled surface might telegraph, I wanted to add equal parts whimsy and decadence into the furnishings, suffusing them with both rich colors and textures.”Above, Hampton covered the floors in wall-to-wall Irish matting from Crosby Street Studio. We really like the way she balanced the luxurious textiles with an organic floor covering. Very chic and very right now. Below, here’s the other side of the room, where Hampton created a lovely velvet covered banquette in one corner. One of the most whimsical aspects of the room was the ceiling fixture–three brightly colored paper lanterns. How fun!A close up of the digitally reprinted tile wallpaper as well as the gorgeous strie painting done on all of the woodwork. One of the things Alexa is known for are her furniture plans. This room is a great example of what a master she is at creating a room that is both beautiful and functional. We like how she placed a desk in between the windows that could be used as a card table, a library table, or even a place to eat dinner on a weekday evening. Here’s a close up of the velvet tufted banquette. Hampton used a variety of different pillow fabrics playing with texture and size. We love how she used colored lampshades of the lamps on either side of the sofa. A little python covered cocktail table was just one of the many little pieces thrown in to add flair and modernize some of the more serious pieces–like this Klismos chair sitting right beside it.   We’ll be sharing more of our favorite details from this year’s show house on Monday.
