Southport Captain’s House
Built in 1804 for a sea captain, this Federal style home sits a few houses up from the Long Island Sound in the historic village of Southport, Connecticut. Our goal was to preserve the original details throughout, disrupting the interior architecture as little as possible. We began the interior decoration in the entry, developing a hand painted wall stencil inspired by one documented in a house in Rhode Island from the same period. Recoloring the stencil from its original green and red colors to a palette of pale blues, grey, and pink gave the historic motif new life. This color story, inspired by Swedish Gustavian painted furniture, is woven throughout the house. In the dining room, a mural painted by Dean Barger depicts land and seascapes close to the homeowner's hearts.
